Neolithic Cannibals is a socially engaged sound art project and exhibition originating in Whitehawk and East Brighton, with artist Simon James, is now coming to Eastbourne for its second iteration.
Explored through the deep time history of the Neolithic in Eastbourne and the contemporary soundscape of Coombe Hill and Butts Brow on the South Downs, this project will mix archaeology, psycho-geography, sound art, and activism to transport audiences to a place where imaginative and fantastical sounds will invite deep listening to explore our connection to Eastbourne's surrounding landscape, and listening to those who are usually unheard.
Through a series of workshops, a group of young artists from Eastbourne will listen to, record and create a new radio show that experiments with sound, music and interviews engaged with the sites Butts Brow and Coombe Hill as symbolic focal points and inspiration for their sonic explorations.
A series of public gatherings will invite audiences to listen and consider the power of collective effort and the part we all play in addressing complex and current social issues.
