Artist and filmmaker Emily Hawes will be co-creating a film with Rooted Community Food volunteers and the public at Gorringe Allotments and Whitbread Hollow. Through a series of experimental film workshops and walks, the group will explore sustainable 8mm film processing and the history of allotments in Eastbourne through the socially transformative work of Mary Ann Gilbert.

This workshop is inspired and co-run with Rooted Community Food Fox Cub Club, a kid‑led allotment adventure for ages 6+ to take the lead at the Rooted Kitchen Plot. Phytography is a process using foraged plant matter to expose directly onto the film in a really fun and experimental process.

Session 1: 10 - 11.30am

Session 2: 12 midday - 1.30pm

Location: Gorringe Road Allotments, Eastbourne, BN22 8XL

Emily Hawes is an artist working with 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film to unearth entanglements between people, places, histories and ecologies. Her practice is grounded in participatory, place-based filmmaking, and developed through forms of fieldwork, embodied research, co-authorship and collaboration. Her recent films are hand-processed using DIY developers made from materials responsibly foraged, sourced and gathered from the environments in which they are made.

In 2026, she was awarded an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant (NLPG) to develop her research into site-specific, regenerative and ecological approaches to artist-filmmaking. Her work has been exhibited at Towner Eastbourne, OUTPOST, MK Gallery, SPUDWorks and Knotworks, among others. She holds an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art (2014) and a PGCert in Creative Education from the University for the Creative Arts (2021), and is currently Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at Northbrook College in Worthing.
