Exhibition Preview: Saturday 1 November, 2pm - 4pm at VOLT
“Up and Down is about how neoliberal life haunts the body, where stress, burnout, and repetition turn ordinary spaces into uncanny stages, while also asking how we might imagine a way out.” - Miguel Martin
Up and Down transforms VOLT into two parallel worlds: an upstairs office and a downstairs gym, two spaces caught in cycles of work and exertion. Screens flicker, weights press down, gestures repeat, and the promise of recovery hovers just out of reach.
Miguel Martin’s installation stages the absurdities of work, exhaustion and resilience culture, while searching for cracks in the cycle; moments where sincerity, play or gifts might slip through. What waits in those gaps is uncertain, but hints at exits not yet mapped.
As part of the public programme, artist David Blandy will be in-conversation with Miguel before hosting Gathering Storm, a role-playing game opening a space for collective storytelling (21st of November, 6 - 8pm at VOLT). Toad Lickers Collective will also host a collaborative workshop responding to the exhibition in the gallery, date and time TBC.
We will be holding our Collective Book Club on the 4th of December, 5.30 - 7pm at VOLT, inviting everyone to bring along a text that relates to the idea of liminality.
Please join us for our opening event on Saturday 1st of November, 2pm - 4pm at VOLT.
