Working with sculpture via replicas, remakes, and ‘shopping’, Madeleine Pledge often uses the surfaces and structure of fashion and design to approach bodies as subjects and objects within systems of production and power.

This series of unique editions is made using the same cut-outs (scanned and re-sized eyeholes from balaclavas made after Rosemarie Trockel) that were expanded, sand cast in aluminium from stacked leather patterns, and fitted around palm trees and cordylines in Marine Parade Gardens for the artist's first public sculpture commission superstructure (public image), 2023. In these drawings, the eyeholes are rendered in nail varnishes from high street cosmetic brands; a high-shine 'bombshell blue' and a metallic silver 'après chic'. The placement of the traced eyeholes varies across each edition.
